(Collection of links for my students including those I used for lecture 11. March. I started a new page for 12. March.)
Updated: 23.00 CST, 11. March 2011
Geophysical data on the earthquake:
- Callan has an updated beachball (as of 9.30 CST on 11. Mar 11)
- the USGS worldwide list of earthquakes >5.0 M (click on map next to top Japanese one to see all of the events from the past week)
- screen capture of the events as of 8.00 CST on 11. Mar 11 from Chris Rowan (easier to see than the USGS map)
- the USGS page for the event (still lists it as 8.9 M on top, but scientific further in 9.0 / 9.1 as of 9.30 CST)
- USGS Finite Fault Model page – 300 km rupture length at the moment (9.30 CST)
- real time seismometer displays for the west coast of the US (click on a station), Maryland, the REV page (pick an earthquake & let’s you see the arrival times for several different stations around the world)
- earthquake source inversion from Geoazur – short duration -> large displacement is implied (from @CPPGeophysics)
- Japan EQ ground motion as recorded by the continental US array (via @highlyanne)
- IRIS data collection of seismograms (and there’s tons) from the earthquake (via @CPPGeophysics)
Tsunami scientific information:
- tidal gauges from the CO-OPS site (going to main page–look at places like Hawaii, Pago Pago in Guam, & Sand Island at Midway)
- NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center page – predictions on when areas are in danger, max values for places that have already been reached, and good general information on tsunamis
- how an earthquake can cause a tsunami (via @cbdawson)
- NOAA prediction for tsunami wave height for the Pacific (via @CPPGeophysics)
- NOAA animation of the propagation of the tsunami wave across the Pacific – very, very cool (via @volcanojw)
Video of Japan:
- Paleoseismicity post that includes Al Jeezera imbedded video of the tsunami sweeping inwards in Japan – disturbing (post also includes tsunami warning diagram for Japan & some numbers as to max heights); update also has a burning oil refinery video further down (checked 9.30 CST)
- Discovery News post that has an imbedded video of the tsunami flowing across the Sendai airport
- a collection of earthquake videos (comment from Madam Geeky on this post)
- BBC earthquake map with videos directly keyed to locations (via @highlyanne)
- more videos via @allochthonous from guardinan.co.uk, Reuters (on YouTube)
- (I’m trying hard not to do repeats–if you find something I’ve linked to twice or two things using the same footage, please leave me a comment)
Pictures in Japan:
- National Post photo gallery of the devastation during & post the tsunami waves (also very disturbing)
- Boston Globe’s Big Picture (some repeats of the National Post gallery) (via @allochthonous)
Tsunami-related pictures outside of Japan:
Some sources you may find useful, but I’m not using in class:
- Smithsonian site (put up very quickly) to give general & more specific information about earthquakes & tsunamis – good set of links
- IRIS teachable moment information about the earthquake
- National Geographic tsunami facts – more general then specific (via @GemKeeper)
- Erik Klemetti talks about how the Moon (super or not) did not cause this earthquake
- Another erroneous theory floating on twitter: climate change speculation about the earthquake / tsunami – if someone writes a post (or knows of one!) tackling this subject, please comment!
- USGS earthquake FAQ
- Silver Fox at Looking for Detachment has a great list of the various geoblog posts from today’s event – there is overlap between what’s here & what’s on various pages
- the science about what goes on at a subduction zone is covered at length by Evelyn at Georneys
- Chris Rowan at Highly Allochthonous posted later in the day & covered some issues that had fallen through the cracks so far (like foreshocks, fault activated by the earthquake, why is the magnitude changing, & what crazy ideas aren’t good ideas for the cause)
SERC links for tsunamis & earthquakes:
- tsunamis (both general & specific) including visualization suggestions
- earthquakes (general & specific) including visualization of earthquakes & plate tectonics
FYI: All the videos have been placed here, up to date:
