Before I get to what my students found this week to write about, I’d like to highlight several blogs that basically covered the assignment I gave my students:
- Erik Klemetti at Eruptions discussed how the press took a new Nature paper seismic tremor & magma wagging (seriously? who chose that title?) into “Mt. Baker is overdue“
- as part of Chris Rowan’s in depth coverage of the science behind New Zealand earthquake, Chris took an article the New Zealand Herald about a suggestion of seismic lensing ramping up the damage and broke down the science
- Anne Jefferson also discussed the difference between how scientists & journalists think & report things in conjunction with the resulting press surrounding two recent Nature papers
Ok, now onto my students:
- the New Zealand earthquake was also chosen by my students (in addition to Chris’ coverage, Dave Petley also has good posts and Erik Klemetti also provided a good summary of the incoming information)
- in case you haven’t guessed, I have several students interested in paleo and one found that a new type of dinosaur called “Thunder Thighs” was reported (also highlighted by the Sauropod Vertebra Picture of the Week – geesh, finding blogs I’ve never seen before!)
- the mud volcano, Lusi, seems to be going strong and will be for 26 (!) years to come (no recent blog posts that I’ve seen)
- changes in the Earth’s magnetic field cause trouble for pilots & compasses (Chris Rowan discussed this issue to some extent back in January)
See you next week!
